Walk into any stone yard in the Lehigh Valley and you'll hear all three words used almost interchangeably — quartz, granite, quartzite. They sound like cousins, and two of them are even spelled nearly the same. But on the day you're cooking Sunday dinner for a full house, setting down a hot pan and wiping up spilled wine, they behave like three very different surfaces.
This is the guide we wish every homeowner had before they fell in love with a slab. No brand pitch — just how each one is actually made, how it holds up to a real kitchen, what it costs installed here, and which one tends to be right for which household.
Pick the surface for how you live, not how it looks in the showroom under perfect light.
The 30-second version
- Quartz — engineered (man-made). Non-porous, never sealed, endless colors. The catch: keep direct heat off it.
- Granite — 100% natural. Heat-tolerant and tough, every slab unique. Needs light periodic sealing.
- Quartzite — 100% natural. Marble's look with extreme hardness and heat tolerance. Pricier, needs sealing, and the name causes real confusion.
Now the part that actually decides it for you.
Quartz: the low-maintenance workhorse
Quartz countertops aren't a slab of stone at all. They're engineered — roughly 90% ground natural quartz blended with resins and pigment, then pressed and cured into slabs (Cambria, Caesarstone, Silestone and MSI are the names you'll see). Because it's manufactured, the color and pattern are consistent, and the range is enormous — including convincing marble looks that won't etch.
- Best for: busy families, anyone who never wants to think about maintenance, and marble-look kitchens.
- Non-porous: never needs sealing, shrugs off wine, coffee and oil.
- The catch — heat: the resin can scorch above roughly 300°F, so a hot pan straight from the burner can leave a mark. Trivets, always.
- Also note: quartz isn't for outdoor kitchens — UV can fade it over time.
Granite: the natural classic
Granite is the real thing — igneous rock quarried and cut into slabs, so no two are ever identical. For decades it was thepremium counter, and it earns the reputation: it's very hard, genuinely heat-tolerant, and often the most affordable way into natural stone.
- Best for: cooks who want a true natural stone that can take a hot pan, and homeowners who love that every slab is one-of-a-kind.
- Heat & scratch: excellent — among the most forgiving surfaces in a working kitchen.
- Sealing: it's mildly porous, so we seal it at install and you re-seal periodically (a five-minute job, often yearly).
- The "slab lottery": movement and color vary wildly across a single granite. You should choose your actual slab, not a 4-inch sample — we take clients to the yard to do exactly that.
Quartzite: marble's looks, granite's toughness
Quartzite is the one people misunderstand most. It is notquartz. It's a natural stone — sandstone that heat and pressure turned to quartzite deep underground — and it's one of the hardest surfaces you can put in a kitchen (around 7 on the Mohs scale, harder than granite). The draw is that many quartzites look like soft, veined marble while wearing like iron.
- Best for: the homeowner who wants the white-and-grey marble aesthetic without marble's fragility.
- Hardness & heat: exceptional on both — it resists scratches and tolerates heat.
- Sealing: natural and porous, so it's sealed like granite.
- The buyer's trap: some slabs sold as "quartzite" are actually softer dolomitic marble that etches when it meets lemon, vinegar or wine. A reputable fabricator tests the stone so you know what you're really getting.
- Why it costs more to fabricate: true quartzite is so hard it's tough on cutting tools, which adds labor — part of why it sits at the top of the price range.
Head to head: the questions that actually matter
Strip away the showroom and a countertop has to answer five everyday questions. Here's how the three compare:
- Can it take a hot pan? Granite and quartzite, yes. Quartz, no — use a trivet.
- Does it need sealing? Quartz never. Granite and quartzite, periodically.
- Will it stain? Quartz is the most stain-proof (non-porous). Sealed granite and quartzite resist well; wipe spills reasonably promptly.
- Will acids etch it? Quartz, granite and true quartzite are fine. The risk is the soft "quartzite" that's really dolomitic marble — which is why testing matters.
- Consistent or one-of-a-kind? Quartz is uniform and predictable; granite and quartzite are unique. Whether that's a pro or a con is entirely your taste.
What they cost, installed, in the Lehigh Valley
Pricing overlaps more than people expect, because the slab itself is only part of the number — edge profile, seams and sink or cooktop cutouts all move it. Installed, in our market:
- Quartz: about $50–$155 per square foot.
- Granite: about $70–$140 per square foot.
- Quartzite: about $60–$150 per square foot.
